Friendship Star Quilters, Inc., meets on the first Monday of the month at 7:30pm at

**Note: In September meeting is held on second Monday, September 13th, 2010.

Most meetings feature a guest speaker.  See below for calendar of scheduled speakers.

Workshops with the guest speaker are held the Sunday before the meeting at the Potomac Community Center 11315 Falls Road, Potomac, MD, 240‑777‑6960. Map Quest Link to the Potomac Community Center

Workshops meet from 9am to 4pm. To enroll in a workshop complete the registration PDF form and bring to the next FSQ meeting with your payment or mail to FSQ, c/o Ann Trudel, 8704 Harness Trl, Potomac, MD 20854. Mark your envelope with "WORKSHOP REGISTRATION".  Costs are: FSQ Members: 1-day workshop $50, 2-day workshop $100; Non members: 1-day workshop $60, 2-day workshop $120.

Have dinner with the lecturer: 5:30 p.m. on Monday evening before the lecture. Ruby Tuesday, 701 Russell Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD.

As the Founder and President of the International Association of Professional Quilters, Morna will share with you the studio secrets of quilters who have transformed their passion into their profession.

September 12: FSQ Quilt-in for Bingo
Join in the fun from 9-4 at the Potomac Community Center. Help your guild prepare for our 2010-11 fundraiser: Quilt Bingo.

September 13: Debra Gabel, Zebra Patterns, Lecture: "How to Make Your Passion of Quilting into a Profitable Business"
Come listen to a fun, energizing lecture on researching, planning, copyrighting and creating an original design. Learn to follow through with marketing and getting your design packaged. A trunk show of quilts designed and marketed by Debra will make this lecture a "must-see" event. Patterns will be available for sale at the lecture.

October 3: Nancy Shriber, Workshop: "Jacket Fitting Workshop"
Design and construct an elegant garment for yourself using the ancient Japanese technique of Sashiko. Originally designed as a mending technique, Sashiko will create a dramatic effect for producing your own unique and personal clothing.

October 4 : Nancy Shriber, Lecture, “Contemporary Sashiko".
Comtemporary Sashiko is Nancy Shriber's line of one-of-a-kind garments celebrating the ancient and timeless art of sashiko. She describes her approach as Simple Elegance. Nancy will show her unique garments quilted, embellished, and texturized with Sashiko.

October 31: Pat Speth, Workshop: “Easy and Perfect Flying Geese”
Hate to make flying geese? Pat Speth will teach you to love to make them. Using her flip and sew method, Pat will show you how to make flying geese without having triangles to cut or bias edges to work with. As a bonus, you will learn how to make flying geese from a 5" square and how to make a pieced border fit your quilt top.

November 1 : Pat Speth, Lecture, “5 inch is a cinch and trunk show”
Based on her three books, Nickel Quilts, More Nickel Quilts and Amazing Nickel Quilts, Pat will explain how her quilts are made with 5 inch squares. She'll also bring 25 to 30 nickel quilts for you to see and touch.

December 6 : Holiday Party  
December 5 : Judy Lundberg, Workshop: “Weaving Fabric”
You don't need a loom or yarn to weave--just fabric! Learn how to weave strips of fabric to create several small quilts. You might also explore painting with Shiva paint sticks to add extra depth and additional texture and color to one of your woven pieces. Bring your specialty fabrics--silks, satins, taffetas, etc. If you can cut it into a strip, you can weave it. Or, just use your beautiful cottons. It's all wonderful fun. Supply List

January 3 : Judy Lundberg, Lecture: "Things I Have Learned"
A member of Friendship Star Quilt Guild, Judy will share with us her 45-year long passion with sewing and 20 years of experience running a graphic design business with her husband. Enjoy a little of Judy's adventures buying fabric, playing with fabric, cutting it into shapes and sewing it back together in exciting designs. So many wonderful fabrics! So many fascinating designs!

February 6: Judi Gunter, Workshop: "Interwoven Stars"
Learn how to create templates to accommodate any fabric motif, stripe, or print to make a star block with an interwoven band.

Join Judi for a lighthearted visit with the First Ladies of the White House. Hear about their times, follies, and personalities. Find who originated the term "First Lady." See quilts, cottons, linens, and textiles that were popular in those days.

Lift your Applique' to New Heights of Elegance. Elly's clear instructions and irresistible imagery help you make more impressive Baltimore blocks and quilts. Learn Elly's unique approach to multiple ruching styles

March 7: Elly Sienkiewicz, Lecture: "Baltimore Album Trunk Show"
Elly Sienkiewicz  has written twenty important needlework books on appliqué from plain to fancy. With all these books on appliqué, she is widely recognized as the foremost expert on appliqué. Elly is also a respected scholar on the antebellum Baltimore Album Quilts. Mrs. Sienkiewicz explores a complex historical style ---"the Baltimore-style Album Quilts" and places it within the grasp of every contemporary quilt maker. She does this through clear patterns and techniques, which demystify the construction process.

May 1-2 : Anita Shackelford, Workshop: "Cutwork Design, Spiral Hand-Quilting"
Discover how you can use this "fold and cut" technique to create your own original designs for appliqué. Learn to cut nearly a dozen different types of patterns and begin to stitch a block using the needle-turn applique technique. Create stunning background quilting designs using the new Perfect Spiral tool. Add radiating straight and spiral lines to patchwork, or behind applique and trapunto. Supply List

May 2 : Anita Shackelford, Lecture: “Personalzing your Quilts”, trunk show
A look at the many ways in which designs can be adapted from
everyday objects and surroundings to create quilts that reflect your personal or family life. Hear the stories behind the designs in many different applique and album quilts.
